International Gift Planning Alliance Formed
In an effort to encourage charitable gift planning worldwide, the U.S.-based
National Committee on Planned Giving (NCPG), The European Association for
Planned Giving (EAPG) and The Canadian Association of Gift Planners *
Association Canadienne des Professionnels en Dons Planifiés (CAGP*ACPDP™)
have united to create the International Gift Planning Alliance.

The International Gift Planning Alliance will advance the mission of each
gift planning association through shared knowledge, efficiencies, services
and strength. The purpose of the Alliance is to create an effective and
pro-active link between charitable gift planners worldwide and increase
collaboration on international charitable giving issues.

The National Committee on Planned Giving, headquartered in Indianapolis,
Ind., will administer the International Gift Planning Alliance.

"We are excited about the Alliance because, by working together, we can help
to increase charitable giving around the world by better educating and
informing donors and fundraisers about how to include philanthropy in their
financial plans," Tanya Howe Johnson, CEO of NCPG, said.

New International Research Study on Bequest Marketing
Long-time gift planner and NCPG member Natasha van Bentum, CFRE, Director of Gift Planning for Greenpeace Canada has received a research grant from the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP). Her project titled, Exploring Earliest Bequest Marketing & Sharing Results with Contemporary Practitioners will result in a practical guide for contemporary gift planners—a web site featuring examples of best practice bequest marketing, going back to the 16th century. Ms. Van Bentum states that one of the goals of the project is to demonstrate in an engaging way, the rich body of historical bequest marketing.

Call for Materials
The research project is international in scope but will have an emphasis on common-law countries. In particular, Ms. Van Bentum seeks a representation of materials from Canada, the US, Australia, New Zealand and the UK. Early examples of good bequest marketing documents are sought for the project. Samples received thus far include an advertisement in an 1882 annual report from the Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto asking for bequests of a minimum of $2,000. According to Natasha, that appeal was “rather bold--in today's dollars like stating point blank you are only interested in bequests starting at $50,000”.

Natasha says that many early examples of bequest marketing (although they would not have been known in those terms) were innovative and witty. They usually had more of a human touch than materials we see today, which can be dry and overly technical with much emphasis on tax relief.

For more information on the project or to submit a bequest marketing sample, contact Natasha Van Bentum at nvbentum@yvr.greenpeace.org.
