Philanthropy in Latin America: An Untapped Well
Charity
has always existed in Latin America, say experts in the fundraising field.
What has not really existed is true philanthropy-complex, organized giving
on a major scale, aimed at changing outcomes. Organizations which track
giving in Latin American identify a few dozen major charities in the region,
most of them tied to major national banks or traditional heavy industries or
the families behind those institutions.

The International Guide to Nonprofit Law
The International Guide to Nonprofit
Law provides the first systematic summary, in layman terms, of the way in
which more than 20 countries in North America, South America, Europe,
Africa and Asia handle what the author considers the ten most critical
issues in nonprofit law. These issues are:
1. The
overall legal context, including protections for the right to associate;
2. Criteria for eligibility for nonprofit status;
3. Internal governance requirements;
4. Tax treatment of the organizations and of contributions to them;
5. Restrictions on personal benefits;
6. Organizational obligations to the public, i.e. reporting & other
requirements;
7. Permissible business activities;
8. Other funding restrictions;
9. Permissible political and advocacy activity;
10. Key outstanding issues affecting the sector.
This resource may be especially important to international grantmakers because increased cross-border grantmaking requires one to know the legal rules. You need to know what restrictions you may face, what kinds of tax breaks are allowed, or even if countries have such laws in the first
place. In addition, cross-border flows of philanthropy and international
cooperation among nonprofit organizations are increasing as well.
The International Guide to Nonprofit Law (reference number 8-6297) is available for $125 from: John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Dept S613 PO Box 6793 Somerset, NJ 08875-9977 Tel: 732/469-4400 or 800/225-5945 Fax: 212/850-6135.
