The Gift
Planner Profile is a survey of Partnership members that describes
professional characteristics and common practices within the field
of charitable gift planning. The first Gift Planner Profile survey
was conducted in 1992, with follow-up surveys in 1994, 1998, 2002
and 2007. It is important to note that this is not a true
longitudinal survey, as different sampling methods and slightly
different questionnaires have been used in each year. However, the
results of the survey provide a snapshot of the state of charitable
planning, and give an indication of broad trends.
About the Survey
The National
Committee on Planned Giving conducted its fifth Gift Planner Profile
survey in August and September of 2007. A direct link to the
web-based questionnaire was e-mailed to 7,126 Partnership members who had
provided Partnership with their e-mail addresses. This is 98% of the total
Partnership membership at that time.
The return of 1,605 questionnaires provided a response rate of
22.5%. Therefore, we can be 99% certain the survey's findings are
within +/-3% of the total membership's response. It should be noted
that the response rate for planners in the for-profit professions
was very low. Only 36 respondents reported that their primary
employer was a law practice or firm; 42 reported that their primary
employer was a financial planning practice or firm; 38 reported that
they were employed by a bank of trust company, and smaller groups
reported other for-profit employers. For this reason, we do not
cross-tabulate results by individual for-profit professions.
